Effective Laser surgery: using the carbon dioxide Co2 laser
The CO2 laser beam is directed through the viewing system of an operating microscope or through a hand-held laser component.
The carbon dioxide laser is now successfully employed for some surgical procedures in gynecology, otorhinolaryngology, neurosurgery, and plastic and general surgery.
The CO2 laser is the highest intensity laser treatment currently available. After being treated with the CO2 laser, the surface of the skin appears tighter and smoother because the laser uses heat to restrict the collagen bands found in the lower dermis. The CO2 laser can eliminate or diminish the appearance of most wrinkles, scars, warts, and birthmarks. It has even been used to treat skin cancer in its earliest stages.
The CO2 laser treatment instrument uses a sealed-off CO2 laser. The output laser is transmitted through the light guide articulated arm. It is characterized by high energy density, good directivity, and invisible far infrared light. When the laser beam is output by the focusing lens, the high temperature generated by the focusing point can vaporize the target tissue, which can be used for cutting, cauterization, and coagulation surgery.
BS-COL1 is a 15W surgical laser therapy system, widely used for animal treatments. Interaction of CO2 laser light with tissue provides a fundamentally different approach to surgery. In laser surgery, a highly focused laser beam can efficiently ablate (either vaporize or chip away) the living tissue. At the same time, it seals (welds) capillaries, small blood vessels, lymphatics, and nerve endings, with significant benefits to both patients and surgeons. The CO2 laser wavelength (10.6 micrometers) is highly absorbed by water contained in soft tissue.
